Committees Of Local 878L.

By-Laws
Committee This Committee meets at least twice per year and gives prompt
attention to any proposed changes, additions or updates to the local Union by-laws or standing rules which
have been referred to this committtee in accordance with the provisions within these
by-laws.
Civil Rights
Committee This committee's purpose is to implement our Union's commitment to
the protection and extension of civil rights and liberties.
PAC
Committee This Committee assists in the promotion, enactment and education of
legislative issues favorable to and endorsed by labor.The committee will also assist members and their
families with voter registration.
Education and Publicity
Committee This Committee shall promote a broad educational program and
encourage members to participate. Their primary responsibility is to gather information for the purpose of
preparing the "Local 878L Newsletter" and to educate members of our local.
Entertainment
Committee This Committee's duties include setting date, organizing games,
entertainment, door prizes and food preparation for the local Union's annual picnic.
Safety
Committee The Safety Committee facilitates the promotion of safe working
practices and the elimination of unsanitary or unhealthy working conditions within the plant. Other
responsibilities include investigating accidents, accompanying OSHA inspectors on tours and attending
annual safety seminars.
Skilled Trades
Committee This Committee discusses items of interest to the maintenance
department and make recommendation to the negotiating committee.
Time Study
Engineers The Time Study Engineers shall study job descriptions to ensure
work loads are fair and equitable and to re-examine piecework rates that are implemented by the
company.
Organizing
Committee This Committee shall encourage and assist in organizing the
unorganized in the plant who are eligible for membership in our local Union. Duties also include
organizing outside the plant.
Women's
Committee This Committee shall encourage and assist working women's interest
within the United Steelworkers Local 878L. This committee also discusses and educates our female
steelworkers about issues dealing with women in the workplace. They can also be temporarily used in other
committees at the
President's descression.
Negotiating and
Grievance Committee This Committee consists of the President, Vice-President, Policy
Committee member(s) and four Division Chairmen. Their function is to negotiate all Local contracts and
agreements and submit them to the membership for their approval. The Grievance Committee makes final
disposition, adjustments and recommendations on all signed grievances.
Good and Welfare
Committee This committee shall make a thorough investigation of all request
for aid. Upon recommendation of a majority of the committee, the President, Fiancial Secretary, and
Treasurer shall be authorized to issue the welfare order so long as funds are available in the General
Operating Fund.
Workers'
Compensation Committee The duty of this Committee shall be to assist and advise members
having difficulty in collecting Workers' Compensation benefits.
Crew
Stewards Each steward shall be held accountable to the Local Union Executive
Board in accordance with the United Steelworkers Constitution, for the enforcement of the rules,
regulations, and contract of the Union within his or her department. The stewards' authority shall be
limited to the department(s) he/she are elected to represent.
Union Label
Committee This Committee shall report to the membership information regarding
products and firms using the Union Label and shall encourage the purchase of the Union Label Goods and
Services. It shall also report information in regard to unfair Labor practices of any firm or
person.
Pension and
Insurance This Committee shall aid and
assist any member that is having problems with pension and insurance.
